I took these photographs while I was studying at the Maine Photographic Workshops in 2004. As I noticed several of the local playgrounds, I felt that something had been lost in the playgrounds I was more commonly seeing at the time, compared to the ones I used to play on when i was young, which in my area were all being torn down and replaced with new plastic structures that looked the same anywhere you went, and boring- with little room for a child's imagination or adventure to play. I saw many kids at the Bangor State Fair, but many of them looked bored, and as a huge fan of parks with rides, that was something that stood out to me. Was something missing in their sense of fun? Maybe I just enjoyed playgrounds a lot more than they did. These photographs capture what I was seeing in this light. They were all photographed with a 35 mm film camera, printed and toned in the darkroom.
